My 6 year old granddaughter will get a piano and lessons for Christmas.
I'd appreciate ideas for related gifts I can give her. The only thing I
could come up with is a metronome. I'm reluctant to buy any method books
as her teacher will want to choose those. Are there any generic books
that would be appropriate? Her piano is an acoustic baby grand donated
by the other grandparents.

Lucky child! If the baby grand doesn't come with a proper, adjustable
piano chair you could buy that for her. Or perhaps a mechanism that
makes it easier for her to use the pedals. I have seen such devices
home made, but probably you can get them in a piano store as well.

I notice that the Van Cliburn site is now selling a CD of music from the 2013 competition "selected especially for you and your baby":

All of the pieces from that album that I remember were extremely nicely played,
and I suppose if a baby can appreciate them, a 6 year old might also. It's not exactly babyish music, just softer pieces, I guess.
